Pastor Chuck Smith still a mighty man of God!

1968: How a middle-aged pastor and some ex-hippies spoke life to a generation declaring God Is Dead | Lynn Vincent

COSTA MESA, Calif.–It was a Monday evening in southern California, 1968. Calvary Chapel pastor Chuck Smith invited everyone who wanted to be baptized to come down to the tiny 19th Street Beach near the church. About 50 kids made the trek, and Smith waded into the Pacific in his street clothes to baptize a French exchange student. “She was going back to France and wanted to be baptized,” Smith recalled. When she emerged from the water, he said, “there was this bright light from heaven shining down on us.”
The beam came from a police helicopter. Smith, now 81, chuckles at the memory: Someone had noticed all the hippies congregating surfside and called the cops.
By then, though, area law enforcement had heard something special was going on at Calvary Chapel. “Judges had these problem kids and saw these changes. Police saw the changes, schoolteachers saw the changes and came down to the church to see what was going on,” said Smith. “These kids were on drugs, all messed up, and their parents didn’t know what to do with them. Now, suddenly they’re carrying around their Bibles and talking about Jesus. So the parents are wondering, just what are they getting into? They came and they heard the word of God, and realized we weren’t a bunch of weirdos. We were just leading these kids into a better life.”

Community Spotlight: Trinity Habitat for Humanity
A disabled Weatherford woman will soon move into her new home, courtesy of one of the most well-known charity organizations in the world. Trinity Habitat for Humanity will be dedicating the house of Kylie Norton this Saturday.
“[She] has been a wonderful partner, helping build her house and put in her sweat equity…to make her dream come true,” Gage Yager, director of Trinity Habitat, said.
Her dream is a wheelchair-accessible home that features no-step entrances, high wall plugs, low light switches, an accessible kitchen sink, a roll-in shower, and more.
“Whenever we work with a homeowner that has some special needs, we will…learn exactly what those needs are and [customize] the house,” Yager said.
This is just one house of the 35 houses that Trinity Habitat will build this year. The non-profit organization has expanded its reach with chapters in Johnson, Parker and Wise Counties.
Yager believes that the success of the organization is linked to the partnership with the homeowners. “We don’t believe in give-away. We believe in partnership. It’s not about what we’re going to do for a homeowner. It’s about what we’re going to do with a homeowner. And the difference between ‘for’ and ‘with’ is monumental.”
Qualifying for a Habitat house requires a lot of hard work. “It’s not the easiest thing to get a Habitat house,” he said. The applicant must not only exhibit need, but must spend 300 hours working on his new home and attend classes on home ownership.
“It’s what they can contribute to change the trajectory of themselves and their families,” he said.
Once the new homeowner gets the house, he gets a 30 year, zero percent mortgage. The foreclosure rate speaks for itself. “Of the 330 houses we’ve built [since 1989], we foreclose on less than three percent,” Yager said.
Habitat exhibits a multi-faceted approach to home-building. One of its programs is A Brush with Kindness, which focuses on refurbishing rather than building. “We rehab existing homes for very low-income home-owners,” he said. After the crew gets done with the refurbishing, “it looks like a new house.”
Habitat for Humanity builds homes in over 90 countries, and Trinity Habitat is no exception. Build the Border is a program that partners with a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the Mexican cities Matamoras and Reynosa. “One can imagine the need in a border town is extraordinary,” he said.
Trinity Habitat organizes week-long mission trips to these border cities. “They don’t have as much volunteerism down there as we do,” he said. “When we get to send money and bodies to build homes, it makes a huge difference for them.”
For people who are really gung-ho about building homes, AmeriCorps offers an opportunity equal to their enthusiasm.
“AmeriCorps is essentially a domestic version of the Peace Corps,” he said. Volunteers are often college students. They spend 11 to 12 months with the Peace Corps and can chose to dedicate that time to Habitat for Humanity.
Members get an educational award, a living stipend, and free housing. In addition, they get to “give back, learn some new skills and trades, [and] maybe go someplace totally in a different part of the country,” Yager said.
The opportunities to help Trinity Habitat are as diverse as its needs. Donors, house sponsors, committee members, construction workers, office volunteers and AmeriCorps members are all important to the Trinity Habitat mission.
For more information, go to trinityhabitat.org or call 817-926-9219.
The KDKR Community Spotlight will feature an interview with Gage Yager this Saturday morning at 10 and this Sunday at 9.

Community Spotlight: Free Indeed
It’s summer. With it comes water activities, electric-bill woes, family vacations, and, of course, lots of great food. Cookouts. Picnics. New recipes. Most of us welcome the summer fare with relish (no pun intended).
Something serious lurks just beneath the surface of the food festivities. It’s worse than obesity and it’s addictive. Some of you who are reading this know precisely what we’re talking about. The rest of us—and that would usually include me—are wholly clueless.
Eating disorders are widespread. Among them, anorexia and bulimia are the most dangerous.
According to a local ministry director, most current treating counseling options do not address fundamental issues. Briana Roths recently founded Free Indeed, a Christian ministry for anorexics and bulimics.
She described the often-ignored dangers of eating disorders. Anorexia—self-starving—deprives the body of nutrition. “The body will actually start feeding on the organs, and organs can eventually shut down as the body is emaciated,” Roths said.
“Bulimics can actually harm themselves by loosing vital minerals in the purging process, [including] potassium. And they are candidates for heart attacks.”
The list of harmful physical effects goes on. However, the emotional fallout is equally as bad. Relationships suffer because people with eating disorders must live behind a mask. Suicide rates for bulimics are relatively high.
Women are more prone to fall into anorexia or bulimia than men. Roths pointed to a number of different causes of eating disorders, including society’s pressure on women to be beautiful and slim.
“I consider an eating disorder to be…a stronghold where the devil has gotten our minds into thinking or believing a certain way, for example that thin is beautiful,” Roths said.
Sometimes an eating disorder begins when people innocently try to start loosing weight.
But Roths said that the causes are often deeper and more emotional. Traumatic events, especially in youth, can cause a woman to try to control something in her life. Unfortunately, their attempts to control their eating habits and body image instead control them.
“The mind is a battlefield,” Roths said. “This is a spiritual war and we can’t just attack this from a physical standpoint and or emotional point solely….the sin nature needs to be addressed, and we can only do that through Jesus.”
That is precisely the focus of her ministry, Free Indeed. She emphasized the power of the gospel to transform people.
“As we surrender our lives to Christ and we give up control….then we gain the freedom that we truly need to overcome these eating disorders. And I’ve experienced that through the power of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in me,” she said.
Those who would like to contact the ministry can call Roths at 817-838-8381 or send her an email at freeindeed@loveneverfails.com. Free Indeed meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at Calvary Chapel Fort Worth. The address is 5617 Diamond Oaks South, Haltom City, TX 76117.
The full in-studio interview will be broadcast Saturday morning at 10 and Sunday morning at 9. Roths will delve into the details of eating disorders and how her ministry aims to help them.

Amen.” Pastor Chuck Smith reminds us that “There’s only one resource book by which you can get a true understanding of God, and that’s the Bible. Your knowledge of God must come through God’s revelation of Himself.”
